[Cycling Art Action] Story of Works — 1000 Steps in Bloom
Creator: Michael Vincent Manalo | Co-creation Participant: Zhan Yawen Arwin Chan
How to relax in the face of children's growth and independence?
"It seems to be salty!" The little girl blurted out the words when they came into view, making everyone laugh.
It happens to hit the common memory of the family. This unique-looking bicycle is like a mini cabin with four wheels. The seemingly surreal appearance, there is a cloud floating above at any time, but it can really open the door to enter the house and ride this bike. Inside and out, the two curiously admired Mike's unique work for his own story.
Growth is also a difference
Regarding parents, what they care about most is the smooth growth of their children. They are afraid of being over-injured and losing confidence, but at the same time they have to let them try. In the memory of teaching children to ride a bicycle, I hope to learn how to rely on their own strength and learn to grasp the opportunity. Just like every day in the past, when a child came to the park with a child, when the child shouted "Don't let go," while the parents, who didn't know that they had let go, were watching his success from behind.
The joy of finding that I learn to ride a bike is immense, and the joy of seeing my child grow up is so touched. But looking at the happily child, there is a kind of ambivalence that spontaneously arises, like the day when the child is overly worried that he does not need himself, his independence means a separation from his parents. But I also understand that these are the pride of being a parent.
Take off the training wheels
Mai can choose to use the wooden house and four wheels as the appearance of this bike, which symbolizes the auxiliary wheels when learning to ride a bike and the physicalization of a family. In the process of removing the training wheels, the parents ran side by side behind the child, showing the trust between the parent-child relationship. Learning to balance the body is also like learning to grasp the relationship between each other. Just as parents support their children to explore forward, children also represent the hope of the family.
And this bicycle is a family, with eaves for shelter from wind and rain, with gas like family’s love to give energy, and a cloud to represent the goal. The process of children learning to ride starts with the company of their family members and succeeds in their own growth. The moment the training wheel is removed, it represents independence from now on; the bicycle can take itself to any place, and the home will always believe in you behind you.
