The project aimed to develop a unique visual identity design for the Cultural Center of the Philippines' Balangaw: Children's Biennale 2022, an event dedicated to children that revolved around three core themes: Kultura (Culture), Kalikasan (Nature), and Kalinga (Nurture).
After conducting thorough research based on the brief, I conceptualized the idea of habi (weaving), specifically the banig, and modernized it to represent the festival's essence. The banig is a traditional mat or sleeping pad made from various natural materials and is commonly used in the Philippines for sleeping, sitting, and as a decorative item in homes. They are also known for their intricate designs and patterns, which are woven into the mat using different colors and textures of fibers.
The banig perfectly symbolizes the festival's three core themes as it is an important part og the Philippine culture dating back centuries and was woven by generations of Filipinos (Kultura), the materials used for making banig are readily available in the local environment thus making it a product of the natural resources (Kalikasan), and weaving them is often a communal activity, where families come together to make them, promoting the nurturing of social and familial connections (Kalinga).
The design comprises a mix of solid and soft shapes that are presented in a pixel style, creating a distinct visual impact. The color palette chosen for the design is inspired by the rainbow, which adds vibrancy and charm, making it appealing to people of all ages. Overall, the design is meant to capture the spirit of the festival and inspire people to engage with the event's themes.
