Background

Miskabags was founded in 2016 and was born out of a hobby and my love for painting on textiles. Since then it has become much more than that. It allows me to express myself and work with other creative people.
It is also an amazing playground to test out different marketing strategies and it is THE project that inspired me to learn more about brand strategy as well.

Who is Miskabags?

Miskabags is an e-commerce brand specializing in hand-painted tote bags that exude sassiness, sarcasm, and even edginess, enabling individuals to express their personalities while being environmentally conscious.
Sustainable ♻️: All bags are crafted from certified organic cotton, ensuring their eco-friendly nature. Even when a bag wears out, it remains reusable; one can mend it or repurpose it as a cloth. The packaging materials, including mailers and wrapping paper, are compostable, minimizing environmental impact.
Fun 🤩: I aim for people to derive joy from styling my bags, just as I enjoy creating them. These bags are designed with the purpose of bringing happiness into someone's life, all while being mindful of the environment.
Sassy 👀: The bags reflect my sarcastic personality, allowing me to playfully address serious subjects. Life is too short to be taken too seriously; thus, my bags often feature messages inspired by the humor I enjoy in my daily life, including memes and witty remarks.

Social Media Strategy & Content Strategy

The strategy behind Miskabags' social media presence is quite simple. While working with a very visual product I saw it as an excellent opportunity to showcase it on Instagram, Pinterest and later TikTok.
The Instagram account was started in 2016, and as you probably know, the algorithm back then was entirely different. Therefore, over the last 7 years, the social media and content strategy had to be updated several times to remain relevant and active based on algorithmic standards.
Some of the strategy updates included:
Shifting from targeting a general audience interested in handmade products to a smaller niche audience that appreciates fun and sarcastic products.
Introducing video content with the launch of Reels (and TikTok).
Emphasizing personal branding - displaying my face as a creator became increasingly crucial, moving beyond just sharing aesthetically pleasing pictures. Similarly, behind-the-scenes content gained prominence, as people started following the brand because of the creator and understanding the brand's WHY.
Target audience: Millennials and Gen-Z (18-45 years) mostly women interested in crafts, sustainability and sarcasm

Content Creation: Content is primarily created on the go, aligning with specific content pillars. When I'm out and about, I take my bags with me and conduct impromptu photoshoots to showcase my products with different outfits, ensuring a dynamic and diverse feed.
Community building: I actively engage with various accounts, making it a point to respond to comments and direct messages. While it's challenging to address every comment and DM individually, I prioritize answering questions about materials, package status, and other inquiries. This continuous engagement is a slow but vital investment in building loyalty and trust within the community.
Learning from the Numbers: Analyzing and reporting results is paramount. It allows me to swiftly identify which content resonates well with the audience. I then use this data to retain and enhance successful content, ensuring continuous improvement and alignment with audience preferences.

Brand guidelines

Funky Typography: The brand guidelines incorporate funky typography to convey the message that the brand should not be taken too seriously. This playful and unconventional approach is reflected in various visual elements such as promotional materials and social media posts.
Logo: The logo serves as a central visual element, representing the essence of the brand. It encapsulates the brand's identity and sets the tone for the overall visual communication. An evil eye has always been a signature symbol for Miskabags and is also used in a few tote bag designs.
Main Colors: The specified main colours define the brand's palette, ensuring consistency across all platforms and materials. Green colours are carefully chosen to resonate with the brand's personality and sustainability message.
Business Cards Design: The design of business cards adheres to the brand guidelines, incorporating the logo, colours, and funky typography. Business cards serve as tangible representations of the brand, leaving a memorable impression on recipients.
Wrapping Paper Design: The design of the wrapping paper aligns with the brand's aesthetic. Even the packaging materials reflect the brand's identity, ensuring a cohesive and delightful unboxing experience for customers.
