A health-tech startup wanted to build a fitness platform that could deliver personalized workout plans, real-time exercise tracking, nutrition guidance, and social features that kept users coming back daily. The goal was a product so sticky that users would make it part of their daily routine.
The technical challenge: building a platform that could personalize experiences for a large user base simultaneously while handling real-time data from wearable integrations, workout sessions, and health metrics.
What I Built
I designed and developed a comprehensive fitness and wellness platform for iOS and Android with AI-powered personalization and deep health ecosystem integration.
Workout & Training:
AI-powered personalized workout plans based on fitness level, goals, and available equipment
1,000+ exercise library with HD video demonstrations and form guidance
Real-time rep counting and form correction using device sensors
Custom workout builder with drag-and-drop exercise sequencing
Progressive overload tracking with automatic weight/rep suggestions
Database: PostgreSQL for user and workout data, Redis for real-time caching and leaderboards, TimescaleDB for time-series health metrics
AI/ML: TensorFlow for workout personalization and form detection, recommendation engine for exercise suggestions
Real-time: WebSocket for live group workouts and social feed updates
Wearable SDKs: HealthKit, Google Fit API, Fitbit SDK, Garmin Connect API
Payments: Stripe and App Store / Play Store subscriptions
Analytics: Mixpanel for user behavior, Amplitude for growth analytics
My Role
I led the full development lifecycle: system architecture, mobile UI/UX implementation, AI-powered personalization engine, real-time workout tracking infrastructure, wearable integrations, social features, subscription payment systems, and App Store / Play Store deployment. I worked closely with the growth team to optimize onboarding flows and retention mechanics.
Technical Highlights
Built a TensorFlow-based personalization engine that adapts workout plans based on user performance, recovery patterns, and goals
Integrated 5 wearable platforms (Apple Watch, Fitbit, Garmin, Apple Health, Google Fit) with unified data normalization
Designed a real-time leaderboard system using Redis sorted sets, handling concurrent updates across global challenges
Built a live group workout feature with WebSocket-based video streaming and synchronized exercise timers
Implemented a barcode-scanning nutrition tracker with a food database API
Achieved strong Day-7 retention through gamified streaks, social accountability, and progressive difficulty
Successfully launched on both App Store and Google Play
