Direct-to-Video Family Christmas: A Nostalgic VHS Project

Carl-Eric Tangen

For another year's family Christmas card, I took photos from another portrait session and channeled the nostalgic charm of 1980s and 90s direct-to-video family films. Inspired by the countless hours spent watching ambitious, low-budget sci-fi adventures from church and public libraries, I created a fictional VHS cover.
The cover design features a painted-style ensemble collage, reminiscent of classic movie posters from that era. I crafted a fictional synopsis for the film, along with a family advisory content disclaimer and a family discussion guide for the back of the VHS case, staying true to the era's educational and moralistic tone.
To further enhance the authenticity, I designed logos for fictional production companies and studios, adding layers of detail to the fictional world. This project was a loving parody and tribute to the unique tropes and aesthetics of family-oriented, low-budget entertainment from my childhood, resulting in a fun and memorable Christmas card.
