Mastering the First Chapter: A Developmental Editing Case Study

Michael Davis

He is a very obvious person when something motivates him, and he will put a lot more energy and care than what he says he will, so that's very important!"

In this project, I guided a client through the developmental editing process of their adult romance narrative, focusing particularly on sticking the landing of their crucial first chapter -- then subsequently, the rest of their novel's outline.
The objective was to refine their narrative voice and ensure a strong start to their story.
Due to our synergy, the project evolved into crafting a detailed outline for over 30 chapters, which helped in structuring the story and planning the plot developments effectively.
Through nearly daily interactions over a year, I provided detailed critiques and actionable advice on various elements such as tone, pacing, and dialogue.
This project was effective at showcasing my ability to analyze and critique in-depth elements of storytelling over the length of a developing narrative, providing both macro and micro recommendations that enhanced the narrative quality overall.
