Context

Goodkind is "the TikTok of Higher Education", using video messages to change the way Universities reach out and engage with candidates and students. As part of my Product Designer role, I led the creation of the brand, established an initial Design System (using Figma) that was shared on mobile and web apps, and defined a design process, aligning with founders on what ideas to work on, and leading discovery, ideation, sketching, wireframing, visual design and prototyping of new products and features.
The Advisor App was the first mobile product design I was involved in from the start while at Goodkind. It expanded the capabilities of the previous mobile app, focused on recording video messages, to add text-based messaging, video calls, and hot lead tracking, making it easier for advisors to identify the right students to record a video for and improving conversion on each step of the admissions funnel.

Objectives

Improve the effectiveness of video messages.
Reduce the cognitive load on advisors, making it easier to follow and convert (or engage with) each student assigned to them.
Improve the onboarding experience.
Allow advisors other communication options besides video messaging.
Improve the video message recording experience.
Developing and making use of the Goodkind Design System on mobile.

Improving effectiveness of video messages

The previous version of the mobile app was focused on recording video messages only. An admin could create a campaign in using the web app, and assigned videos for different students or prospects to different recorders in the organization. While the conversion rates were higher than comparable email messages, recording videos was a reactive task that was disconnected from the result. It also took time for recorders to feel comfortable.
In this new version of the mobile app, the role of the recorder evolves into an advisor role. Each advisor is assigned a student or prospect (instead of a video to record), and each campaign has a clear goal the advisor is expected to help the student get to.

Improving the onboarding experience

Our goal for the new app and onboarding experience was to make it easier for new advisors to understand what a good video message looks like, and record a first video message on the first-time use experience, getting them as quickly as possible to that "Aha" moment.
Adding three great example video messages in the onboarding and allowing the advisor to record an intro video they could start sharing right away without needing an admin to create a campaign or assign a student was a way we could make sure to reach that goal.

Improving the video message recording experience

Based on learnings made on the previous version of the mobile app, the new recording experience built on this and improved the video message recording experience, adding a teleprompter style for the script, pinned audience custom attributes, and support for basic and custom Snapchat filters.
