Designing a smarter workflow for construction estimating
Boon is an AI-powered estimating experience designed to help construction teams create and manage project estimates with less manual work.
The goal was to turn a traditionally spreadsheet-heavy process into a more structured workflow while keeping users in control of their estimates.
The Challenge
Early-stage estimates often start with spreadsheets, making the process difficult to organize, review, and maintain.
Estimators need to work with large amounts of project data, line items, quantities, costs, locations, and markups while making sure the final estimate remains accurate.
The opportunity was to simplify this workflow without removing the flexibility experienced estimators need.
Understanding the Workflow
I mapped the estimating process into a clearer sequence:
Define → Structure → Estimate → Review
The interface was designed to guide users through each stage while keeping important project information visible throughout the process.
Building the Estimate
The experience starts by defining the project context, followed by selecting the appropriate structure for the estimate.
Users can then add and manage individual line items, including:
Materials
Labor
Equipment
Quantities and unit costs
Locations
Markups
This creates a more structured foundation for calculating project totals and projected profit.

Grouping & Totals
For larger estimates, line items can be grouped by location or project section.
This makes it easier to review costs at a more granular level while keeping subtotals and overall project totals visible.
The goal was to make the relationship between individual items and the overall estimate easier to understand.
AI Estimate Assistant
The AI assistant was designed as a supportive tool, not an autonomous decision-maker.
Users can interact with the assistant using natural language to:
Generate estimate suggestions
Explain cost impacts
Recommend relevant information
Request specific changes
Review suggestions before applying them Every AI suggestion remains reviewable before it changes the estimate.
Full Design
The final interface combines the estimating workspace with the AI assistant in a single view.
The layout follows a clear left-to-right hierarchy, allowing users to navigate the project, work with estimate data, and interact with AI without losing context.
