Basecamp for iPad - Landscape View

Although this design looks ancient today, it has played a huge role in my career as a designer, so I decided it worths to share the story.

Back in the days, when I was freelancing and already worked with clients from all over the world, one of them was a US based web design & development agency called Worry Free Labs and run by Jason Curry.

Ivo is refreshingly smart and communicates very well. He's a talented designer and turns work around quickly and for that he's also very fun to work with.

Together we worked on many projects and they used Basecamp (Classic) to manage all their work and collaboration between the team members and clients. This was a tipping moment for me as I was struggling to manage my other client projects with different to-do apps, so I got sold easily and fell in love with basecamp. About that time I had my first iPad and really loved it and wanted to use it as much as possible, but I had a problem - there was no native Basecamp app for iPad (and for iOS in general).

With that said, I decided to dedicate some time over the weekend to design something and try to solve my own "problem".

It turned out that I was not solving only my own problem... At that same time a tiny company based in Ireland was also building a great project management software, which was way better and more powerful than Basecamp. The had just hired their first dedicated mobile apps developer and he was tasked to build an iPad app for their product and to find a designer to help with its ui and ux design.

That company was called TeamworkPM back then, but today it's known as Teamwork.com and the mobile developer, who found me through these shots posted on Dribbble, was Mike Butler, who later became the Head of Mobile team.

I’ve been lucky enough to work with Ivo for just over 11 years, spanning right from when Teamwork was just a handful of people up to now, where it is on track to generate $100 million ARR. Back then mobile was tiny, we had no designer. I came across some of Ivo’s work and knew we needed to get him on board. Happily he saw instantly what we were trying to achieve and joined straight away. I got to work very closely with Ivo over the next five years or so. Over that time we worked on revamping the Teamwork mobile app, giving it a completely refreshed look. Happily the new look was so good it resulted in Teamwork revamping the main areas of the web app to match the fresher and cleaner style. After that we worked on an iPad app for Teamwork. The innovative swipeable-columns based interface had both a huge impact and was so enjoyable to build. The iPad became a great tool to show customers with that bit of a wow factor - especially when it was in person. After that Ivo took on a more central role in design at Teamwork and moved on to working on design for a number of the products. But being the kind of person he is, it was never a problem to contact him for ideas and thoughts. I really enjoyed working with Ivo, he’s easy to work with - and comes with lots of ideas and alternatives. He’s able to understand the customer while responding quickly with high quality insights and designs. In short, I can’t recommend Ivo highly enough.

Ivo is an incredibly talented designer - some of the designs he's cooked up for us over the years are the best I've seen and he has great attention to detail.
