Introduction

In a world where traditional banking is often slow, expensive, and inconvenient, Kuda was created to offer a seamless, digital-first banking experience for Nigerians. As the Lead UX Designer, my role was to design an intuitive, user-friendly, and efficient banking app that eliminates unnecessary fees while empowering users to save, spend, and manage their finances effortlessly.

Project Overview

Product Name: Kuda – The Money App for Africans

Provide a fee-free, digital-first banking experience.
Simplify money transfers, bill payments, and savings.
Ensure top-tier security with biometric authentication and fraud detection.
Deliver a modern, user-friendly interface for effortless navigation.

Tech-savvy millennials & Gen Z who prefer digital banking.
Freelancers & entrepreneurs managing transactions and expenses.
Everyday Nigerians looking for a transparent, hassle-free banking alternative.

Problem Statement

Many Nigerians face challenges with traditional banking:
High transaction fees on transfers and bill payments.
Long queues and delays at physical branches.
Complex, outdated banking apps with poor usability.
Lack of smart financial tools for budgeting and saving.

Key Question:

How can we design a digital banking experience that is simple, fee-free, and empowering, while maintaining security and trust?

Research & Insights

User Research & Market Analysis

We conducted:
Surveys with 1,000+ users to understand frustrations with existing banking apps.
Competitor analysis of other fintech platforms like Opay, Chipper Cash, and traditional banks.
User interviews with freelancers, salary earners, and business owners.

Key Findings:

79% of users wanted a bank with no hidden fees.
Ease of use & speed were the top priorities for banking apps.
Over 60% of Nigerians use multiple bank accounts due to trust issues.
Security concerns were a major barrier to digital banking adoption.

Design Process

1. Wireframing & Information Architecture

Created low-fidelity wireframes to map out user flows.
Optimized the navigation to reduce friction and simplify transactions.
Prioritized a one-screen access approach to key features.

2. UI Design & Branding

Used a clean, minimalist interface for a stress-free experience.
Implemented high-contrast typography and colors for easy readability.
Designed a dark mode for improved usability.

3. Core Features & UX Enhancements

Zero-Fee Banking – Free transfers, bill payments, and ATM withdrawals. ✅ Smart Budgeting & Savings – AI-powered spending insights and automatic savings. ✅ Instant Account Opening – Open an account in minutes with just a phone number and BVN. ✅ Biometric Authentication – Secure login via Face ID & fingerprint. ✅ Overdraft Feature – Users can get small loans instantly. ✅ Seamless Card Management – Virtual and physical debit cards with spending controls.

Designed in Figma for seamless collaboration.
Built with Flutter for a fast, cross-platform experience.
User-tested multiple iterations to refine the experience.
