Project Overview

My role: UX designer, researcher

The product

Our organization has developed a Hybrid Jiu-Jitsu app with the objective of streamlining class scheduling and providing users with real-time access to critical information, thus eliminating the need for time-intensive searches. This noteworthy feature facilitates prompt and effortless access to both present and future classes, always keeping our valued users up-to-date.
The problem: The challenge of locating and enrolling in Jiu-Jitsu classes.
The goal: The Hybrid Jiu-Jitsu app will provide users with seamless access to essential Jiu-Jitsu information, including class schedules. This convenient feature is expected to significantly enhance the user experience by streamlining class registration through a user-friendly calendar feature.
Project duration: March – April

Understanding the user

User research summary
Through a series of interviews and empathy mapping exercises, I gained a comprehensive understanding of the user demographics and their unique requirements. Our research identified a key user group consisting of regular Jiu-Jitsu practitioners seeking a more streamlined class lookup and sign-up process. This group validated our initial assumptions regarding Hybrid Jiu-Jitsu's target market. However, the research also revealed that users were looking for a comprehensive app that fosters greater connectivity and community engagement among Jiu-Jitsu practitioners
User research pain points
Difficult signups: Sign-up processes were not easily completed
Lack of clarity: Platforms Lacked important information and information was difficult to find
Lack of connectivity: Platforms stated the minimum amount of information and left out the ability to connect with the gym and others

Staring the design

The primary objective was to create an intuitive and straightforward user interface that facilitated easy access to the application's features.

Digital wireframes

During the initial design phase, attention was given to incorporating key features that were identified as essential and desired by users, based on our research findings. These features were prominently placed on the home screen, ensuring that they were easily accessible to users.

Usability study findings

I conducted two rounds of usability studies. Findings from the first study helped guide the designs from wireframes to mockups. The second study used a high-fidelity prototype and revealed what aspects of the mockups needed refining.

Round 1 findings

Users were confused about where things were on the login screen
Users had a hard time finding and reading the buttons
users stated they wished some labels were stated differently

Round 2 findings

Users had a hard time reading the scheduled calendar
Felt that it was unclear what to do on the class selection page
Felt that the landing screen felt cold

Refining the design

Based on the study findings, users had trouble identifying the next action to take, or even selecting classes due to unclear prompts. In the final design, a clear and concise prompt for the next action was implemented, accompanied by a color-coded system that differentiated the classes, resulting in a more user-friendly and navigable interface.
Impact: The Hybrid Jiu-Jitsu app is specifically crafted to cater to the unique needs and preferences of its users, thereby creating a sense of brand loyalty and customer-centricity.
