📖 Context: Companies today face significant costs from inadequate facility monitoring and operations that manifest in many ways. Motive aims to upsell their services from moving vehicles to offices, facilities, and warehouses to monitor their infrastructures.
💼 My Task: Design a way to automate camera monitoring for offices and buildings to improve safety, security, and efficiency.

Overview

We had initially started off with a broader business goal that we broke down into our product goal:

Business goal

Increase sales with existing customers through upselling, or cross-selling.
Product goal Help businesses monitor their facilities (offices, buildings, sites, etc.) with cctv cameras that catch any event and report them through AI.

Audience

For our beta testing, we planned on upselling this feature to our existing customer base.

Benefit for Motive

Utilizing existing tech to create new product offerings, We would be using the same technology that we’re currently employing for monitoring trucks and logistics for facilities
Increased revenue with minimal effort, We wouldn’t be going out of our way to expand to new markets or gain new customers, rather pitch our new product to our existing customers

Benefits for customers

Reduced costs of CCTV monitoring. Monitoring for your office, warehouse, and facility manually is an extremely costly endeavour. Making it much more affordable for businesses. Since we’re utilizing the same technology, we also have the advantage of reduced cost over our competitors
Centralized monitoring. Most of our users are already using our platform to monitor their freight, making Motive their go-to solution for all monitoring needs.

Research phase

In our research phase, we conducted interviews & surveys.

What we learned from our research:
One of the biggest operational costs was running cameras
User were more interested in detailed reports than day to day operations
Users wanted quick actions for high priority alerts

Define phase

In this stage, we created a storyboard and set up our information architecture to understand how our users would be interacting with the product.
This was a super iterative process and required a lot of back and forth
These were rushed drawrings, so please ignore the bad drawings
What we accomplished from our defining phase:
What features do we want to include in MVP
Users should be able to view all cameras
Users should be able to view all events that have occurred
Users should be able to get an overview of the entire facility
What story do we want to follow in our designs
This would be for the users to view. We would not offer any actionable steps in phase 1
What worked well
✅  to change time with a simple scroll interaction.
✅  Easy to change days or jump to a specific time as well
✅  Easily view camera details along with the option to view events associated with any camera
✅  Provide visual location of the camera for better user recall

Further areas of improvement

❌  The designs might require a learning curve for the user to get used to

Questions to think about

?  What if we mix events that occur on fleet trucks with the ones in the facilities?
?  What if the user wants to set auto-actions based on certain events? How would we handle that?

Impact of design

While the above design may not be perfect. They did help us understand whether or not this concept would help our users or not.
Here are some of the key impacts that we found:
We were able to upsell this service to 80% of our enterprise users
63% of the users were very satisfied with the new product service
45% of the users loved the mobile alerts for high-priority alerts

Improvements suggested by users:

Have the ‘high alerts’ selected by default in events page
Most of the users wanted to view high alerts only at least on the first glance. This helped reduce their time & efforts
In the camera view, they wanted a list of all the events for a quick glance
