A business owner needed a high-retention promotional video for TikTok and Instagram ads. The only asset: 21 minutes of raw, unstructured footage with no script, no direction, and no creative brief.
The goal: distill that raw footage into a short-form ad that hooks viewers instantly and holds attention long enough to drive action.
The Strategy
I approached this as a content distillation problem, not just an editing job. The strategy had three phases:
Content mining: Watched the full 21-minute clip multiple times, flagging every moment with visual energy, authentic emotion, or product clarity.
Narrative structure: Designed a story arc that would work in under 60 seconds: hook, value demonstration, and call-to-action, built entirely from existing footage.
Platform optimization: Tailored the pacing, aspect ratio, and visual rhythm specifically for short-form ad platforms where the first 3 seconds determine whether someone stays or scrolls.
Execution
From the raw footage, I identified the strongest 8-10 moments and sequenced them into a tight narrative flow. Key editing decisions included:
Opening with the most visually striking moment to stop the scroll
Aggressive pacing with cuts every 2-3 seconds to maintain retention
Strategic use of text overlays and transitions to reinforce the message without relying on audio
Color grading and visual consistency to give the final product a polished, branded feel
The entire edit was built in CapCut, optimized for vertical delivery across TikTok and Instagram Reels.
Results
21 minutes of raw footage condensed into a 59-second promotional video
Delivered a scroll-stopping ad creative ready for paid distribution
Client response: "super impressed and excited," praising the creativity and how effectively it captured the brand
This project proved that you don't need a professional shoot or a detailed brief to create high-performing ad content. You need sharp editorial instincts and ruthless pacing.
