Creative Strategy for Fern Fitness Ad Campaign

Project Overview Fern Fitness is a women's activewear brand competing in one of the most saturated categories on paid social. They needed more than one-off ad creatives, they needed a creative engine: a system for generating, testing, and scaling ads across multiple angles and formats. I led the creative strategy end-to-end, from concept development to format mix, copy direction, and production briefs.
The Challenge In women's activewear, ad creative makes or breaks performance. Generic gym-girl footage and flat product shots get drowned out by competitors with bigger budgets and louder hooks. Fern was burning through spend on creatives that looked nice but didn't convert, and had no clear read on which messages actually resonated with their customer. They needed a strategy that treated creative as a testable variable, not a guessing game.
The Approach I built the strategy around a three-layer framework: angles, concepts, and format mix.
Angles defined the message, the emotional or rational hook the ad leads with. For Fern, I developed a set of distinct angles including: "finally, leggings that pass the squat test," "designed by women who actually train," "the fit that fits you, not the model," and a founder-led brand-story angle for top-of-funnel.
Concepts translated each angle into a visual idea, problem/solution split-screens, before-and-after fit comparisons, founder POV monologues, and customer testimonial-style spots.
Format mix assigned each concept to the production style that would test it most efficiently:
Statics for fast, cheap hook and headline testing
AI avatars to A/B test scripts at scale before committing budget to live creators
UGC creators to deliver authenticity and scale spend on the angles that proved out
