The Beginning
I was approached by a producer to create demo's for their new Musical Theatre, they wanted to get my take on the song's rather than just tell me how they wanted it. They instead told me the layout of the show with the theme and some context and they wanted me to be creative with the singing.
The Creation
To create this project for my client my process was:
STEP 1: I booked a meeting with them (zoom) to go through the whole show and give it to me as a whole and to find out what the style and pace was of the show, if it was dark or on the lighter side and the overall feel too. Having a nice clear idea of the show premise allows me to really tell the story
STEP 2: I took a listen to the songs I was being asked to sing and with my background in musical theatre I could associate all the songs with previous experiences with songs I have sung, one had the style of '42nd Street', another like 'Jekle and Hyde' and this one was more like 'Jesus Christ Superstar'.
Step 3: I sat down with the lyrics and made some notes on each song where I felt the words and sections were to be highlighted to really bring that emotion to the forefront so the message was clear
Step 4: Once I started recording I could hear other was of singing it in my head and started to go back and forth with the client to see if this way of singing it was going to work for them. I find that collabarating in this way keeps the client involved with the process and helps bring it closer to what they see and hear in there head.
Step 5: I like providing options, so that there are options to look at when deciding what you want. Even if it's not the whole thing, you may hear something different and use that small section of an alternative part instead. It's nice to have options
Note: I allow for any revisions that may be required and always allow for as many as is required to bring this song to a great finished product.
The Result
The client was happy and we collaborated on the whole show and brought it together the way they envisioned it.
