Project overview

For this project, I was provided with a brief to design and develop a brand new e-commerce website for Planet Lover. Planet Lover is an eco-brand that offers stylish and sustanaible solutions to replace plastic packaging. While the primary goal of the new e-commerce website was to allow customers to purchase products online, the site also needed to distinguish Planet lover from other eco-friendly brands by emphasizing their highly curated inventory of handmade items.

Role

UI designer & front-end developer(Shopify)

Project time

3 weeks

Website

Goals

The primary business goals for this website included:
Having clear ways of locating products
Clear and minimalistic navigation
Having an efficient means of purchasing one or more products
Steering customers towards other similar products in their store

Challenge

The client has a tight deadline: 3 weeks to design and develop from scratch a ready-to-go online store corresponding to all business goals and user needs.

Solution

To be able to meet a deadline, I prepared a project brief comprising all functionality and a detailed plan to add other features step by step after launch.

Competitive research

I began research by identifying the main three competitors in the Canadian eco-friendly market and comparing their online stores. I was keen to identify common features across the sites and spot opportunities for Planet Lover to be unique. The competitors I decided to focus on were Olsen + Olsen, Zero waste mvmt, and DemainDemain. With each providing slightly different products but similar customer demographics. Hero section with a call to action, bestsellers and featured collection on the homepage were common features on all three websites. In addition, they all included a cart, profile, store information and newsletter form in the footer.

Lo-fi wireframes

Main page

Hero section contains two main categories of best products. As Planet Lover offers to plant a tree with every purchase, I added "Trees planted so far" counter with increases with every order to establish more trust for the brand.

Navigation & cart

To follow a minimalistic approach and reduce the number of clicks for the user, the cart drawer leads straight to the checkout page.

Information & customer service

I wanted to simplify all the content and present it in a way that would be easily digestible. The solution was to add one page with all information customer needs inside tabs.

Product showcase

I use a masonry grid with a tab switcher to make the product list stand out.

Next steps

I enjoyed working on this project, and we will continue to improve the current design and functionality according to the preliminary plan.
