Hyakki Yako Neon

Hyakki Yako is a neon studio in Kyoto, Japan, that creates custom neon signage. Inspired by the warm, electric glow of neon and the artistry of neon making, the studio aims to blend traditional craftsmanship with modern, one-of-a-kind signage designs. The studio was founded by Ray Kudo, a neon artist whose fascination with neon lights began as a teenager. A few years later, he embarked on his journey, traveling to Hong Kong, Bangkok, Manila, Ho Chi Minh City, and Singapore to capture the beauty of neon lights. He later apprenticed in California, Ukraine, and Japan, fully immersing himself in the craft of neon-making. The task was to develop a visual identity that captures Ray’s neon journey around the world, as well as his style and personality as an artist. During our calls, Ray shared his fascination with the unique, mysterious atmosphere neon creates when glowing in the dark, and I sought to capture this feeling in the designs. For this project, I created a visual identity, posters, business cards, and a website design.
