Kelp
Hi, I'm Noah, an 18-year-old student from Cornwall in South-West England.
Outside of design, I spend much of my free time spearfishing and freediving along the Cornish coastline. Through this hobby, I realised that while there are plenty of diving apps available, many focus on a single purpose and fail to bring together the tools that freedivers and spearfishers actually use.
This inspired me to create Kelp — a personal dive companion designed specifically for freedivers and spearfishers.
Kelp combines dive journaling, catch logging, breath-hold training, dive planning and buddy safety features within a calm, minimalist experience inspired by the Cornish coast. Rather than functioning as another social media platform, Kelp is designed to be a private and personal record of time spent in the ocean.
One of the key challenges was that I had no previous experience designing apps or user interfaces. To overcome this, I used Google Stitch to rapidly explore ideas, generate interface concepts and iterate on layouts. Stitch allowed me to transform an idea that previously existed only in my head into a realistic product concept.
The result is Kelp: a thoughtfully designed companion for divers who want to track their progress, stay safe with trusted dive buddies and document their experiences beneath the surface.
