Cover image for Most contractors watch revenue. The
Most contractors watch revenue. The smart ones watch cost percentage and profit margin on every job. Here is a simple example: Contract amount: $100,000 Total job cost (labor, materials, subs, equipment, site costs): $85,000 Profit: $15,000 That means: Cost percentage = $85,000 ÷ $100,000 = 85% Profit margin = $15,000 ÷ $100,000 = 15% On paper, 15% looks okay. But in construction, small mistakes can easily eat that margin: Extra labor hours not booked to the job Material wastage and rework Subcontractor change orders not billed correctly Site overheads missing in the budget If margin drops from 15% to 5%, profit becomes only $5,000 on a $100,000 job. Same revenue. Very different result. That’s why clean job costing and regular review of cost percentage and profit margin are more important than just looking at total sales.

We are making money on this project Right? Do you think so? lets have Knowify Dashboard This is the scariest question a construction contractor can ask at the end of a job. Because by then, it’s too late to fix a leak. Look at this practice dashboard snapshot inside Knowify. It tells a brutal but powerful story about an active HVAC modernization project. The Breakdown: Remaining Contract Value (WIP): $89,800.00 Looks good on paper, right? Invoiced so far: $30,200.00 Committed Costs: $63,500.00 The Reality Check: Because we tracked committed costs early, the system immediately flagged a $14,420.00 budget overrun, showing a temporary 100% loss line of -$33,300.00. Why is this a WIN, not a failure? If you only look at your bank account, you might think you are doing fine. But by tracking purchase orders and subcontractor commitments in real time We caught the cost spike WHILE the job is still active. The contractor now has the power to stop, audit the field errors, issue change orders, and protect their remaining gross margins. No bad surprises at the end of the month. #MEPContractors (https://www.linkedin.com/search/results/all/?keywords=%23mepcontractors&origin=HASH_TAG_FROM_FEED)#WorkInProgress (https://www.linkedin.com/search/results/all/?keywords=%23workinprogress&origin=HASH_TAG_FROM_FEED) #Knowify (https://www.linkedin.com/search/results/all/?keywords=%23knowify&origin=HASH_TAG_FROM_FEED)
