699 Years of Blue was inspired by The Met’s Ming dynasty Jar with dragon. I was drawn to the idea that an image created nearly seven centuries ago can still feel alive today. Rather than simply making the vessel look futuristic, I wanted to explore what survives across time: the object itself, its imagery, or the cultural memory attached to it. The transparent form and dissolving cobalt dragon represent that tension between fragility and endurance, suggesting that cultural memory survives not by remaining unchanged, but by being reinterpreted and carried forward.
Jar with dragon, Ming dynasty, Xuande mark and period (1426–35), Object No. 37.191.1.
