Here is my third and final animation for #EndTheCageAge by Compassion In World Farming UK. If you haven’t seen my hen and rabbit animation yet, check them out and read about this farming welfare campaign. We chose to highlight sows, hens and rabbits because Compassion In World Farming considers these animals to be most in need of systemic change when it comes to confinement. The animations were used as ads on Meta to gather support and donations for the #EndTheCageAge movement. My name is Jenny and I’m a freelance animator, specialising in campaign videos for the safeguarding of nature and for the preservation of human and animal rights. If you’re curious about animation, please reach out! I would love to connect with you.

Hello Contra Community. Here is my second video for #EndTheCageAge. The project involved a delicate balance between stylisation, and realism. The client asked me to design the animals so that they look accurate and somewhat realistic, but to simplify the form and detail. The goal was to keep it as uncartoony as possible. I referred closely to filmed footage of the animals expressing their natural behaviours to try to replicate the movement accurately. As an animator who’s used to conveying emotion in faces, it felt unusual to me to avoid that for this project! The cage the animals are in takes design elements from the End The Cage Age logo, and is supposed to be more symbolic of confinement than a representation of how the animals are kept. The client was specific about how large the cage should be in reference to each animal, because they wanted that part to be realistic. I drew the animation in Photoshop and put it all together with shapes and textures in After Effects. The animation itself is a combination of hand drawn elements and animated shapes – the approach I took for each shot depended on the animation involved. If you’re curious to understand this better, throw me your questions! When I tell you that the animal in the final animation is considered especially intelligent, I bet you can guess...

An animal welfare campaign that's really close to my heart is #EndTheCageAge. I was hired by Compassion In World Farming to design to animate three short videos for three different animals that are commonly confined to spaces inappropriate for their species. This restriction prevents them from expressing natural behaviors, leading to severe physical and psychological suffering. Higher-welfare, cage-free systems already exist and are entirely viable. I'll explain more about my technical approach when I share the next video. Maybe you can guess which species will be featured in the other two animations...

I made this quirky animation for the #BreakFreeFromPlastic (https://www.breakfreefromplastic.org/) foundation, a global movement to achieve a future free from plastic pollution. They shared it across their socials and I loved the response! I hope to make much bigger, more impactful animations to help campaign against pollution in the near future. In the meantime, I'm trying to purge my own life of single-use plastic.
