I grew up just outside Washington, DC and received my BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art. I currently reside in a Baltimore rowhouse with a drafting table and a cat.
I carve the immediacy of an idea into my images.
I begin with the simplest of sketches knowing that the accidents caused from working with the board will define the illustration much more so than any detailed drawing. The sketch merely suggests the concept and composition whereas the scraping knife will define the finished piece. In many ways my work echoes the woodcuts of the German Expressionist movement with its intrinsic portrayal of the abruptness of emotion.
When people glimpse my work, I'd like them to have a gut reaction to the design and effortlessly grasp the concepts portrayed.
It is simple. It is a gesture. It is direct.
Even though the medium I use can be seen as inherently stark I still find that it doesn't preclude either humor or subtle beauty in the process of its creation. There is a whole language of conversation that can be rendered with simplicity and that is how I choose to speak to the viewer.
I am resident of Baltimore and a graduate from the Maryland Institute College of Art. I had my first major publication with the National Geographic Society in 1999 and have been working as an illustrator ever since.
