What happens when you upload an image into AI and ask it to turn it into a video? The system does not “animate” the picture or understand the scene. It converts the image into a latent representation and, trained on large video datasets, predicts how images change over time. The output is a sequence of frames that are probable continuations of the original image, generated using a diffusion process (from noise to image). The model is not reconstructing reality. It samples from a probability distribution of videos. This is why results often appear repetitive or inconsistent: the system follows statistical likelihood, not physical laws. In this example, I uploaded a surreal Magritte painting into Grok. Despite its unreal composition, the model applies probable motion, translating it into familiar movement patterns.

I had a random visual idea in my head: monks walking one by one into a futuristic city at night, each carrying a bunch of black grapes. So I decided to see what it would look like. I asked ChatGPT to help write the prompts, and generated the visuals with Grok.

I actually like when it’s obvious that a video is AI-generated. There are two directions you can take with AI: either try to make something so realistic that it doesn’t look like AI at all, or go the opposite way and create something intentionally surreal and impossible. Here is my Neotropolis. Year 2147.
