Hi I am Danielle Cruse. I have spent the past 20 years as a K–12 art teacher, which is really just another way of saying I have spent 20 years acting as a creative director for hundreds of wildly different personalities. Every day means managing ideas, expectations, timelines, materials, and emotions — all while teaching the fundamentals of visual communication. But before I stepped into the classroom, I worked professionally as a designer and creative director, so I entered teaching already fluent in the language of layout, hierarchy, and storytelling.
These two chapters have sharpened each other. My early design career gave me the technical foundation and creative discipline to build strong visual work. Teaching gave me the ability to break down complex ideas, guide people through creative processes, and understand how different audiences interpret imagery. Together, they shaped a design perspective that’s both strategic and human‑centered — grounded in clarity, purpose, and the ability to communicate visually with impact.
