Saw this play out recently: a supplier lead time was creeping longer than usual, visible in the data weeks before it became a real problem. Nobody acted.
Not from carelessness every instinct in the room said "let's get one more read before we commit." Wait for next week's numbers. Loop in the ops lead. Confirm it's not noise.
All reasonable. None of it changed what the SKU was doing while everyone waited.
By the time the call finally got made, runway had dropped from three weeks to eleven days, and a reorder that would've been routine a week earlier now needed an expedite fee just to land on time.
This is the pattern I see most often in inventory decisions: nobody's dragging their feet on purpose. They're doing exactly what good operators are trained to do double-check before committing capital.
But inventory doesn't wait for a second opinion. An eleven-day runway doesn't pause for a Thursday meeting.
The brands that consistently avoid this aren't smarter or taking on more risk. They're making the same call, just a beat earlier at the point the signal first shows up, not the point it's undeniable.
This is the exact judgment layer I work inside of with 7-8 figure Shopify DTC brands: catching the signal early enough that the decision is still cheap to make.

I was just going about my day, doing a checkup for this store.
Guess what I saw.
Their "post-purchase flow" and "upsell customers after their first purchase" automations had been throwing the same error... for MONTHS.
Same red flag. Run after run after run.
Nobody caught it. Nobody fixed it. It just sat there quietly bleeding revenue.
Here's the part that stings: these aren't random workflows. They're the flows that upsell customers right after they buy—arguably the cheapest revenue a store can generate, because the customer is already in buying mode.
Every time that flow errors out, that's a discount never offered, an upsell never shown, a second sale that just... didn't happen.
Multiply that by every failed run, every month, and you're not looking at a small glitch. You're looking at real money left on the table, quietly, for almost a year.
This is exactly why "set it and forget it" is such a dangerous mindset for ecommerce automation.
Flows break. Apps update. Integrations shift. Shopify changes something upstream. And if nobody is actually watching the dashboard, you won't know until you stumble on it by accident — like I just did.
If you're running a Shopify store with automated flows, upsells, or post-purchase sequences, you need someone who actually checks under the hood. Not once a year. Regularly.
An in-house (or dedicated freelance) Shopify designer/developer doesn't just build things and disappear — they vet your systems, catch errors before they compound, and fix them before they cost you another month of lost upsells.
