Sunlight is 8 minutes old. Except it isn't.
Everyone knows sunlight takes 8 min 20 s to reach us. Almost nobody knows what happens before that. The energy spends up to 170,000 years trapped inside the Sun: absorbed, re-emitted, sent off in a random direction, again and again. The last 8 minutes are the easy part.
So I made a 60-second film about that journey, from the Sun's core to the back of your eye.
A few things I'm proud of: → No stock footage and no After Effects. Every frame is generated in code: the Sun, the plasma, space, Earth, even the iris. → The photon's path is 7,000 real random steps, and every collision you see has its own sound in the score. → The pupil shrinks when the light hits it, because that's what your eye actually does.
Watch it with sound on. 🔊
Quick question for you: what's one "everyone knows that" fact you'd want turned into a 60-second film? The best answer gets the next one.
