Day 3 of 30-day UX Law: The Decoy Effect đź’˛
The Decoy Effect is a cognitive bias where people change their preference between two options when a third, less attractive option is introduced.
This third option is the decoy and it isn’t meant to be chosen. Its job is to make one of the other options look like a much better deal.
⸻
Real-world example: Popcorn pricing 🍿
Imagine you’re at the movies and see these 3 options:
Small popcorn — $8
Medium popcorn — $14
Large popcorn — $15
At first, $8 for a small feels like the safest option.
But then you notice something strange: the Medium is only $1 cheaper than the Large.
Suddenly, the Large feels like the smartest choice.
Not because you originally wanted the Large — but because the Medium acts as a decoy and makes the Large seem like far better value for money.
That’s the Decoy Effect in action.
⸻
Why it matters in UX and product design
The Decoy Effect is widely used in:
- pricing pages
- subscription tiers
- plan comparisons
A business may intentionally create an objectively weaker or less suitable plan just to make another plan feel more appealing.
⸻
Design & Product Tips
Be transparent Clearly communicate the differences between product options. Avoid hiding the flaws or drawbacks of the decoy; instead, present all choices objectively to help customers make informed decisions.
Be fair in your pricing Ensure that the pricing strategy, while designed to guide choices, reflects genuine value. Avoid setting unrealistic prices for decoys to artificially inflate the appeal of the target option.
