Most artist websites are boring. Here's why, and what I'm doing about it.
I've been auditing music artist websites for Genesix Studio, and the pattern is everywhere: musicians pour their creativity into Instagram and TikTok, then treat their own website like an afterthought. Templates get reused. Nav bars just link out to YouTube and ticketing pages. Nothing feels like the artist.
Next up, I'm redesigning Twenty One Pilots' site, a band whose entire identity is built on lore and world-building. The question I'm working through: what if the redesign wasn't decoration, but storytelling?
The concept: "Escape from Dema."
Using the band's own mythology (the walls, the bishops, the breach) I'm mapping a full narrative arc onto the site:
→ Landing: trapped inside the walls → Tour dates: tracked coordinates → Music and videos: the first crack, where fans decode lyrics and lore → Merch: the breach, the payoff for making it through
But a story only works if it still does the job. So every scene is being built around a real requirement: navigation that still gets fans to tour and merch fast, tour dates that stay scannable, an email capture that doesn't interrupt, and a merch grid that converts without extra decoration.
Follow along for the full breakdown as it comes together: the problem, the concept, the visual direction, and how story and function work side by side.
