Different systems. Same goal.
Somewhere along the way, we started treating different accounting methods like personal attacks.
One contractor tracks job costs in QBO, another in Excel, another in Procore.
One reviews WIP weekly, another monthly.
One uses markup, another works on gross margin.
And suddenly, someone jumps in: "That’s completely wrong!"
But is it?
A system that works for a $500k contractor won't look the same as one for a $10M contractor—and that’s completely okay.
Instead of asking, "Are you doing it like me?"—the real questions are:
1️⃣ Are your job costs accurate?
2️⃣ Are change orders recorded?
3️⃣ Do you know your actual gross margin?
4️⃣ Are you reviewing WIP before issues get expensive?
Different methods work. Ignoring the numbers does not.
Next time someone shares a different way to price, bill, or manage projects—we don't have to attack. We can just ask: "Why does this work for you?"
You don’t need to win every argument in the comment section. Share your experience, respect their process, and get back to building a profitable business.
What’s one tool or process in your business that others disagree with, but works perfectly for you? Let's discuss!
