Hello world! As an engineer, that's what we learn when we first learn how to program. I would also let that to be the lead of my very first post on Contra.

I've spent enough years around hiring pipelines — as an engineer and as someone who's had to evaluate other engineers — to trust exactly one signal: what someone actually shipped. Not what they wrote about themselves. Not 45 minutes at a whiteboard. Not a take-home they did for free on a Saturday and never heard back about.

Everything else in the hiring stack is a proxy for that, and most of the proxies are broken. Take-homes were supposed to fix this. They didn't. Unpaid, hours of real work, submitted into a void. And your strongest candidates — the ones with other offers — are the first to drop out of a process that asks for a free afternoon before a single conversation.
