Google's Open Knowledge Format (OKF): useful, but not the AEO shortcut it's being sold as
A lot of SEO posts this month say OKF is the new way to get cited by AI. I read the spec and Google's announcement, and that claim doesn't hold up yet.
What OKF actually is An open spec from Google Cloud (now v0.2) for packaging knowledge as a folder of Markdown files. One concept per file, a small YAML header where only "type" is required, and normal Markdown links between files so AI agents can follow the connections.
What it isn't • Not a Google Search ranking factor. The announcement doesn't mention Search, SEO or AI Overviews. • Google's own Search docs say you don't need special AI text files to appear in AI features. • I found no primary source saying any AI search engine reads OKF bundles today.
Where it's worth trying • API references, data dictionaries and product specs • Docs you already keep as Markdown in Git (a small pilot costs little)
Where to skip it for now • A marketing site chasing AEO/GEO traffic. Crawlable pages, clear answers and solid technical SEO still do more.
The full guide has a small example bundle and compares OKF with llms.txt and schema markup. https://ivig.dev/open-knowledge-format/
