Building in Public: LogSentry 🛡️
I wanted to share a project I've been working on to solve a real-world problem: how to spot server brute-force attacks quickly without relying on heavy, bloated software.
I built LogSentry, a lightweight, dependency-free Python utility that parses server authentication logs, tracks failed login attempts using regex and hash maps, and flags suspicious IP addresses right from the command line.
What it does under the hood:
Uses Python's re module to cleanly extract timestamps, usernames, and source IPs line-by-line.
Implements configurable threshold checking to isolate brute-force risks.
Built entirely on Python's standard library (argparse, collections, re) so it’s fast and requires zero external dependencies.
It’s been a great exercise in writing clean, production-ready code and handling log data efficiently. You can check out the source code and documentation on my GitHub, and I'll be writing a full technical breakdown on Hashnode soon!
Let me know what you think or if you've built similar automation tools.
