Most clients don’t start a conversation by asking about the tech stack.
They usually ask: “Can you build this?” “How much will it cost?” “How long will it take?”
But , my first client opened the conversation with: “Are you a Next.js developer? I specifically need a Next.js developer.” That caught my attention.
Because there’s a common idea among developers: “Clients don’t care whether you use React, Next.js, PHP, or anything else. They only care about results.”
And yes that’s true for many clients. But not all of them.
Some clients have already done their research. They’ve compared technologies.
They may have spoken with other developers, studied competitors, considered SEO, performance, scalability, integrations, or even how easily they’ll hire developers later.
By the time they contact you, they’re not asking: “What should I build this with?”
They’re saying: “I believe this is the right stack. Can you build it properly?”
And I think this creates an interesting responsibility for developers.
Don’t blindly agree just because the client mentioned a technology.
Understand "why" they chose it.
If Next.js genuinely fits the product, explain why. If it doesn’t, explain the trade-offs.
Because there are really two types of valuable clients: Those who bring you a business problem and trust you to choose the technology. And those who bring you a business problem + an informed technical direction.
A good developer should know how to work with both. The real skill isn’t forcing your favorite stack into every project. It’s knowing when the client’s technical decision is right and when it needs to be challenged.
