Why is it so hard for computers to generate a random number? Computers follow predictable conditional rules- we want them to behave how we expect them to. This makes programming them to select randomly without being anticipated by other computers a major cybersecurity challenge. Cloudflare famously use objects with truly unpredictable motion to generate their phishing-proof encryption keys at each of their offices, like this wall of lava lamps in San Francisco, a wave machine in Lisbon and a pellet of decaying uranium in Singapore.
