I was drawn to the vessel because its form suggested function: it wasn't simply a figure with an object resting on its head, but something made to hold and pour water. I wondered what would happen if a museum object were allowed to perform that function again. Water became the transition from preserved object to living experience, eventually transforming the figure into a young man swimming freely through a river.

Really compelling transformation from a static vessel into a living narrative—the shift from object to swimmer gives the concept a clear emotional arc. The water transition and restrained lighting make that change feel earned rather than purely decorative.

Wenceslaus Hollar's 1645 etching, after Leonardo da Vinci, depicts two figures facing one another with deliberately exaggerated facial features. The work explores a striking encounter through distortion, expression, and close observation.
The Beauty Between Them asks a simple question: What if beauty exists in the eyes of the person looking at you?
Inspired by Hollar's A deformed couple facing each other, I kept the figures' distinctive features rather than correcting or beautifying them. Instead, I transformed the world around their encounter. Their shared gaze becomes the source of warmth, tenderness, and beauty, as though the way they see each other changes reality itself.
I wanted the work to challenge the idea that beauty is an objective quality, and instead explore it as something created through recognition, affection, and perception.

I chose Self Portrait, created by an unknown artist around 1800–1805 and currently on view in The American Wing at The Met.

I used it as a starting point to imagine what we can’t see: his studio and the moment he painted this very self-portrait.

What if the painting outlived the landscape?
The project was inspired by John Ruskin’s The Valley of Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland (ca. 1866), from The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Open Access collection. Ruskin’s watercolor captures the Alpine landscape through layers of light, shadow, distant peaks, and atmospheric haze.
Before generating, I mapped the idea into six scenes, each supporting a different part of the story. In FLORA, I worked iteratevly , and eplored several AI models, refining references, motion, scale, and composition to preserve photographic realism and visual consistency.
Rather than remaking the painting, I imagined a future in which Ruskin’s work is no longer simply an image of a place. It has become an archive of something humanity can no longer encounter in the physical world.
The museum preserves the artwork, but also reconstructs the world contained within it: its scale, atmosphere, movement, and sense of life. The painting becomes a portal between two realities — a record of what once existed and a way for future generations to experience what has been lost.
The artwork survived. The landscape didn’t.
For us today, the painting is a representation of nature.
For people of the future, it is nature.
