You don’t have a content problem. You have an indexation problem.
At least, that was the situation we found in a recent SEO audit.
Before creating more content, we checked whether Google was actually indexing the content that already existed.
What we found
• 162 URLs known to Google
• 86 URLs indexed
• 133 HTML pages identified in the crawl
• 7 language versions
• only 17 URLs included in the sitemap
The English version was fully indexed.
Localized pages?
Only around 62% were indexed.
That meant the business had invested in multilingual content, but a significant part of that investment wasn’t entering Google’s index.
What we checked
We compared:
Google Search Console → Screaming Frog → sitemap → internal linking → canonicalization → robots directives
The objective wasn’t simply to “increase indexation”.
We wanted to understand why Google was treating different URL sets differently — and which pages actually deserved to be indexed.
Priority actions
1. Rebuild the sitemap with relevant localized URLs.
2. Add hreflang information to the sitemap.
3. Strengthen internal linking to important localized pages.
4. Submit the updated sitemap in Search Console.
5. Request indexing for the highest-priority pages.
6. Measure whether better indexation leads to more pages generating organic traffic.
And this is the important part:
Indexation is not the KPI.
If you go from 86 indexed pages to 120 but your number of traffic-generating pages stays the same, you haven't solved the business problem.
You’ve only improved a technical metric.
A good SEO audit should answer a much harder question:
“Will this technical fix actually create more organic traffic?”
That’s the standard I use when evaluating SEO work.
