How I Audit a Business Website in 5 Minutes.
You don't always need a full technical audit to spot major problems with a business website.
In just 5 minutes, I can identify several issues that may be costing a business leads.
Here's what I look at:
1️⃣ The first 5 seconds
When I land on the homepage, I ask:
👉 Do I immediately understand what this business does?
👉 Do I know who they help?
👉 Is the value clear?
If the answer is no, the visitor may leave before exploring further.
2️⃣ The Call-to-Action
I look for an obvious next step.
Can visitors easily:
📞 Call?
📩 Send an inquiry?
📅 Book an appointment?
🛒 Make a purchase?
If there's no clear CTA, potential customers may simply disappear.
3️⃣ Mobile experience
I open the website on my phone and check:
Is the text readable?
Are buttons easy to tap?
Does the page load properly?
Is anything overlapping or broken?
A website that only looks good on desktop isn't enough.
4️⃣ Page speed
Slow pages create friction.
I check whether images, animations, scripts, or unnecessary elements are making the experience slower than it needs to be.
5️⃣ Trust signals
I look for:
✅ Testimonials
✅ Reviews
✅ Case studies
✅ Client logos
✅ Certifications or credentials where relevant
Visitors need reasons to trust the business before taking action.
6️⃣ The contact process
I test the contact form.
Is it simple?
Does it work?
Is it asking for unnecessary information?
Most importantly, what happens after someone submits it?
7️⃣ The overall user journey
Finally, I ask:
"If I were a potential customer, would I know exactly what to do next?"
A website doesn't have to be perfect.
But it should be clear, fast, trustworthy, mobile-friendly, and easy to use.
Sometimes fixing a few strategic issues can make a bigger difference than completely redesigning the website.
If you visited your own website for the first time today, what would you improve first?
