Before I built systems for others, I built one to save my own team.
We were running our CRM out of Google Sheets and our email inbox. Leads were being tracked inconsistently, follow-ups were falling through because nobody knew who had contacted whom, and responses were going unnoticed. We looked at dedicated CRM platforms like Zoho and Apollo but they were either too rigid for how we worked or too expensive to justify at the time.
So I built one on Airtable. Free tier.
One table for all leads. A formula field that flagged who needed a follow-up based on the last contact date. An email button that let anyone on the team send a follow-up directly from the record. No switching between tools, no manual logging, no missed responses.
It was not complicated. Within a month of switching, we had closed two new clients we would otherwise have lost track of.
That build is more or less what I now offer as a standalone template. The logic has not changed much since. Most early-stage teams have the same problem and the same constraints, and Airtable's free tier has always been sufficient to solve it.
