I've designed wellness brands, EV infrastructure, jewelry, hospitality, fashion, fintech.
Diametrically different aesthetics. Each one intentional. Each one mine.
But I keep asking myself:
Does range signal mastery? Or does it dilute the signal?
Specialists get hired faster. Generalists solve harder problems.
I'm curious where other Contra designers land on this.
Do you niche down or let the range speak? Drop your take below. ↓

Oh man, that's a tough question really, "design range" sounds great but on the other hand "creative focus" means "expertise" right? Hmm a T shaped focus with some range maybe? :)))

Honestly it's a hard question but range helped me early on. I learnt fast, I have build my confidence, and I figured out what I actually love doing.
But after a point, being good at everything can mean nobody really knows what to come to you for.

I am more in the let the range speak category. It's because I didn't wanted to do only 1 kind of project. I wanted to explore different design problems every industry face. You also look in the mine category. How it is working out for you 😊

I think range signals mastery when it is underpinned by rigour - look at Leonardo Da Vinci (who was a polymath). To be a master, there must be a method that one masters - range without method is just variety. Mastery is method.

Specialists across all fields are paid more and are in higher demand. It's a difficult choice, but one you should definitely make. I would suggest reading Blair Enns "Win Without Pitching" if you are interested in this topic!

I will put it next on my list, thanks!🙌 If you has any suggestion (books or anything) hit me up!

Thanks for the reply! Win Without Pitching is easily accessible, and in many languages. It's short too (100 pgs). ✴✴✴
