BALENCIAGA — AFTER THE GLAMOUR
This monumental armchair is built on the contrast between a strict architectural form and a chaotic, almost living surface. Its low, substantial silhouette and wide armrests evoke a club chair, an oversized bag, and a shapeless garment discarded after a fashion show.
The entire surface is covered with thousands of narrow, glossy black strips and fragments of recycled plastic. They move with the sitter’s body, catch the light, and create a shimmer reminiscent of paparazzi flashes. From a distance, the chair appears as a solid black volume; up close, it reveals a complex, almost aggressive texture.
The concept for Balenciaga is to transform fashion-industry waste into an object of extreme luxury. Materials associated with packaging, garbage bags, and production scraps are assembled by hand into a striking couture surface. The chair balances between expensive and cheap, beautiful and repulsive, functional object and fashion statement.
A person does not simply sit in the chair they sink into a black mass and become part of the object. The surface responds to the body, unfolding around it and retaining a temporary trace of its presence.
Key phrase:
Luxury does not disappear. It becomes waste.
