I spent the last few minutes testing Lottie Creator 2.0, and this is one of the more interesting launches I've seen this year.

They're calling it "After Effects for the web."

Bold claim.

But after trying it, I understand why.

Here's what stood out:

• Everything runs in the browser. No desktop app to install. • You can create vector animations from scratch. • Motion Copilot AI helps automate repetitive animation work. • State Machines let you create interactive animations without manually wiring everything together. • Export directly as Lottie or dotLottie, ready for production.

What I like most isn't the AI.

It's the workflow.

For UI designers, product designers and startups, animation has always been one of those "I'll do it later" tasks because it usually means opening another application, learning another tool, or handing everything over to a motion designer.

This removes a lot of that friction.

I don't think this replaces After Effects for complex motion graphics.

But for:

Product UI animations

Empty states

Onboarding illustrations

Loading animations

Interactive components

Marketing websites

...it's genuinely impressive.

If you're a designer who already uses Figma every day, this feels much closer to the workflow you've probably wanted for years.

I'm curious where this goes next.

If browser-based design tools keep getting this powerful, we might be entering the era where most UI animation never touches desktop software.

Seven years ago I hand animated an entire Wimbledon campaign for Jaguar, frame by frame in Lottie

The project was Ace Pace. I designed and built the site myself in Webflow, made all the motion by hand, and connected the API so you could see people playing in real time

Looking back, it sounds like a lot of work, and it was, but I reckon it could be done quicker today, and honestly with a much better output

The design looks dated to me now, but the concepts underneath it still stand up, and that's where I think an LLM would push it further than I could at the time

So I'm curious, how would you approach it? I do enjoy looking back at past work and still finding pride in some of those processes.
