To all my South African independents out there, wishing you an excellent Heritage Day.
It may be a little cheesy, but South Africans really do love gathering around a braai. And it’s never just about the cooking. It’s the food, the drinks, the people, the music, the stories, and everything that happens around the fire.
So wherever you’re gathering today, enjoy it.
Happy Heritage Day. 🇿🇦
*Braai: very roughly, a South African barbecue. But also, not really.
The first is a forest green bag on coral, the loaf tipped out of it, a dark green disc behind, crumbs scattered on the surface, fine serif in cream.
The second stands upright, a cobalt bag on a cobalt block against yellow, the loaf rising out of the top, window light across the wall, crumbs at the base.
The first is a terracotta tin on a blue ledge, whitewashed arch and sea behind, a cracked pod and a pile of loose cacao beside it, olive branch and clay urn in frame.
The second is a cream tin with a brown lid on a yellow disc against deep red, one bean at its base, light raking across in hard diagonals.
