It’s 10:00 AM. I’m deep into a Next.js API route... then Slack pings. I fix a UI bug... then I get a Calendly invite. Now it’s 5:00 PM, and I’ve written 40 lines of code but answered 200 messages.
As a full-stack freelancer juggling React, Next, Svelte, and Node daily I’ve realized something harsh:
We don’t lose time. We lose state of mind.
Going from debugging a Node.js memory leak to styling a Svelte component isn't just a "task switch" it's a complete mental factory reset. It takes me a solid 15 minutes just to get back into the flow state after an interruption.
Here’s my new rule for Q3 (starting today):
Morning Block (9 AM - 12 PM): Deep code only. No Slack, no emails. The stack doesn’t matter React, Svelte, whatever just build.
Afternoon Block (1 PM - 4 PM): Meetings, code reviews, and client comms.
Last Hour (4 PM - 5 PM): Documentation and planning tomorrow’s context switch intentionally.
If you're a multi-stack dev like me, protect your flow state like it's production code. Because honestly? It's worth more.
What’s your biggest distraction today? Let’s vent in the comments
