Before running a workshop exercise, test the instructions with someone who hasn't helped plan it.
A new fictional example: an adult workshop asks pairs to “review the sample and improve it.” In a trial run, one pair corrects spelling while another rewrites the whole document. Both followed a plausible interpretation, but neither was told the intended task.
Make the instruction concrete: • Work in pairs for six minutes • Read the supplied one-paragraph project brief • Underline its intended audience and the requested deliverable • Write one question about information still missing • Be ready to show the marked paragraph and your question
Try the revised instructions with a willing colleague using only the materials participants will receive. Ask them to explain what they would do first and what they would produce. Note where they need clarification, revise that wording and check again. This is a small preparation test, not proof that every participant will find the exercise clear.
Keep the task, time, group size and finished output together on the activity plan. Bring your subject expertise to the debrief and adapt the route to the group's practical needs.
Shown: the complete “Prepare one repeatable activity” worksheet from Command Current's Workshop Facilitation Kit. The trial-run scenario above is an added fictional illustration, separate from the included completed example.
Five-file ZIP: six-page editable Word packet, matching print PDF, Excel agenda and follow-through tracker, fictional completed example and Quick Start. Designed for desktop Word and Excel; PDFs are static. For adult workplace and community workshops; you supply the curriculum and facilitation judgment.
