This piece comes from a fun series of animations and illustrations I created with Harvey Guillén, who brought Guillermo to life in What We Do in the Shadows.
One of the challenges here was keeping the animation clean and efficient enough to export as a Lottie file. Definitely a fun constraint. Took it on and made it work!
Krok is a chaotic and inventive frog who lives in a hidden creative workshop inside an abandoned industrial building. He sees possibilities where everyone else sees junk.
For the Cantina Challenge, I created Krok’s pilot episode: a 60-second animated short where his improvised engineering turns a pile of discarded metal into a homemade transforming robot.
The goal was to explore how a character can be more than a visual design, giving him a recognizable personality, environment, sense of humor, and a story engine that can generate future episodes.
Krok’s creative philosophy is simple:
Build first. Figure out why later.
The episode combines character animation, visual comedy, sound-driven storytelling and a handmade scrap-metal aesthetic to introduce the character and his chaotic world.
This project was created entirely in Cantina, from character development to the final pilot.
Day 5 of 60-days-collecting-awesome-motion-design-references
I am gathering cool references for my own work as a Motion Designer, and this one has been on my radar since a while.
Base 44 it's a great example of great motion and storytelling. i think their branding offers a lot of possibilities to build engaging visuals. It is also fun to watch, mixing video and design with a really goos sound.
