I use ChatGPT almost every day, and there’s a clear line between where it helps and where it quietly hurts.
Where it helps:
- Drafting a formula I already know how to check
- Explaining unfamiliar code so I can decide whether to trust it
- Turning rough notes into a first version I can edit
Where I stop trusting it:
- Cleaning a dataset without me looking at the rows it changed
- Producing numbers I can’t trace back to a source
- Anything where a confident wrong answer costs more than a slow right one
The pattern is simple. It’s great when I can verify the output quickly, and risky when verifying costs about as much as doing the work myself.
The tool matters less than whether you’ve built a habit of checking what it hands back.
Where do you draw that line in your own work?
