Anthropic's own junior technical hires went from 27% of hires to 9%.
Not a forecast. Their own scorecards, published by their own economists.
The company that sells the coding model cut its junior hiring to a third.
→ Junior share of technical hires: 27% → 9%
→ Junior share of technical staff: 21% → 14% since early 2025
→ About one in three ML managers says AI made them hire less
→ One hiring manager: "I want them to be fungible across domains"
→ On non-technical roles: "that 20% that was strategic becomes 90% of the job"
I run a one-person company. Agents do the implementation reps.
What I see every day: the junior work did not vanish. It moved to the agent.
The judgment work did not shrink. It became the whole job.
Three rules I run by:
Rule 1: Hire for the 20% that was strategic. The rest is a prompt plus a review.
Rule 2: A junior who can audit an agent's output is worth more than one who can only write it.
Rule 3: Count the reps. If nobody junior gets reps now, nobody senior exists in ten years.
The lab wrote the number down. Most companies just did it quietly.
