Another History | Would I Exist Without World War II?
Rongali is a curious writer who follows an overlooked historical fact until it unsettles something personal. He wants to connect the dots, but has to recognise where evidence ends and imagination begins.
While reading on his laptop, he learns that Japanese aircraft attacked Visakhapatnam in 1942, near the village where he was born. A war he had understood through the Axis and Allies suddenly feels close to home. He imagines interrupted journeys, meetings that might never have happened and generations that might have unfolded differently. Then his pen stops: he has drawn a possible path, not discovered his family's history.
This pilot is adapted from my original essay. The uploaded video runs approximately 79 seconds, including Cantina’s end card. The historical attack is real; the family scenes and connections in the film are imagined. I have no family record connecting my birth to that event, and the possibility that history shaped my life could never justify its suffering.
Another History would continue with intimate present-day discoveries that open into imagined possibilities. Future episodes would explore how history survives in everyday language and how a family photograph can reveal the gaps between recorded events and remembered stories. Each discovery returns Rongali to his notebook and his central discipline: asking a compelling question while being honest about what he cannot know.
The character, visuals, narration and assembled video were created in Cantina. The pilot closes by turning its question toward the viewer: in another history, could you and I be the missing persons?
