Ghostwriting newsletters for C-suite executives, I've: • Handed back a draft that I knew wasn't good enough. • Misjudged a founder's voice so badly that it pissed them off. • Watched a technically perfect newsletter get ignored because it had nothing genuinely surprising in it. That's the reality of doing this work seriously. You will fail so many times. And it's not always a writing problem. Sometimes it's an interview problem: the ghostwriter didn't ask the right questions. Sometimes it's a positioning problem: the executive hasn't decided what they actually believe. Sometimes it's a trust problem: the executive is editing out every sentence that has any edge. All of those failures taught me something the wins couldn't. That a great executive newsletter is just as much about excavating as it is about writing. You have to forget about making things up and focus on digging up what’s already in your client’s mind—their observations, their frustrations, their hard-won lessons—and putting them into language clear enough that a reader thinks: "I needed to read this today."
