A suspension bridge isn't one rigid span, it's built with deliberate gaps.
Steel expands when it's hot and contracts when it's cold, by enough that a bridge welded shut end to end would buckle or tear itself apart within a single summer. So engineers build in expansion joints, small gaps with interlocking teeth, that let the whole structure grow and shrink by inches without anything cracking.
Most design systems get built rigid instead. One fixed set of breakpoints, one locked grid, built for the content that exists on launch day. The first time a client adds a longer headline or a new card type that doesn't fit the original three columns, something has to crack, usually a dev copy-pasting a one-off override at 11pm before a deadline.
I've started treating breakpoints the way a bridge treats temperature: not a wall to stop change, a gap built to absorb it.
Where's the one joint in your current build that's actually flexible, versus the one that'll just crack the next time something doesn't fit?
